the democrats need 17 seats. there's a reason why barack obama has transitioned his political operation into this non-profit messaging operation to reinforce the direction he wants to go with the country at the grassroots level to target those seats. i don't see how and where the republican party beyond, you know, calling a committee meeting here and there has been on the ground in neighborhoods doing the very difficult, out-of-the-box work relating to voters. and so unless they do that, unless they message is really honed and fine-tuned, it's going to be very difficult to hold on as the president's momentum grows. we'll see what happens in response to the state of the union. we'll see what happens in response to immigration and other issues. but, right now, to your point, i think we've got a lot of work to do and it starts with making sure that you have your base behind the steps you want to take. you just can't go out and say, oh, obama is a bad guy, follow us. >> now, governor, talking about base behind, political says the rnc meeting focused on broadening the appeal to minority vote

at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics." president obama's 23 executive orders on gun control are still being attacked by conservative lawmakers in washington. republican congressman steve stockman of texas has introduced a bill to outlaw the orders as unconstitutional. previously, he threatened to file impeachment proceedings against the president because of the executive orders. beyonce singing the national anthem sparked a lot of reaction over lip syncing. the performance was praised bay reeja franklin who said she did a beautiful job. and aretha who sang at the 2009 inauguration in that hat said she even might prerecord in the future. clint east wad's performance at the republican national convention when he talked to an empty chair, that was a big attention getter. now come word that chair he used is on display in the chair of the rnc chair in the office of the rnc chair. john boehner gave a talk to the republican think-tank on tuesday about the inauguration. he said obama wants to annihilate the republican party and boehner joked about having to calm down legendary college footbal

republicans. he will give political cover to some who may want to go up against president obama. >> oh, i think that's right. i think that's one quadrant, but, of course, you had john waern, who is also a republican, former chairman of that committee, who strongly defended hagel and his views, and sam nunn on the democratic side. there are a lot of former chairman around that may have other issues. people aren't looking at thad cochran. thad cochran came out as the first republican to issue p public support for hagel, and he was one vote away from beating trent lott for senate majority leader some years ago. you have leaders. this is -- as john mccain said, this is not a neat difference among friends. there are deep idealogical differences about world view and america's place in the world, and i think that those opposed to hagel are trying to get a bandwagoning effect happening. i've talked to senator shumer and others who don't see that happening. i have talked privately to a couple of republican senators who are keeping their powder dry right now, but they're not quite ready to jump in
